Depression is referred to as a psychological condition which affects an individual’ s emotional state. Human beings suffer from different ailments that affect both their physical state and emotional state. Depression is one of the many disorders people undergo. Depression has been defined by psychiatry as a mental condition characterized by feelings of severe despondency, dejection, feelings of inadequacy and guilt. It is accompanied by lack of energy, disturbance of appetite and sleep. Depression is said to come in many forms. Depression is not a sign of weakness or a condition that can be wished away nor is it the same as a passing mood.

It is believed that there is a link between creative art and depression. Psychologist and psychiatrist tend to agree that major depression can be amplified in people who tend to ruminate on their thoughts. Rumination is one of the major keys of thinking like a creative genius. Creativity is about thinking, which means that thinking would lead to manic episodes of feelings such as hopeless or failure. Therefore, it can be stated that depression does not make one creative.

Art therapy is a unique approach to depression treatment that helps a person get in touch with feelings and use creative expression as an outlet. Art therapy for depression includes activities such as drawing, painting, sculpting, and dance or movement therapy. Depression can be treated but there are people who do not seek medical help once they realize they may be suffering from depression. Depression is known to be a mood disorder which results in a persistent change in an individual’ s mood. Evidently, a person diagnosed with the condition can show a general loss of interest with an increased level of sadness.

Depression will always affect how an individual thinks or behaves due to the fact that the condition leads to varied emotional problems. Depression may require a long-term form of treatment based on the fact that persons diagnosed with the condition can feel better when provided with the right medication alongside psychological counseling. Major depression is considered to be a serious disorder which is highly relevant to the clinical field
