The Pedestrian is another futuristically set book by Bradbury which is based on the year 2053. The time has shown to be changed where the streets are empty and dark while the people spend their times on their couch watching television. As Leonard Mead walks the streets examining the dreariness of the atmosphere, he wonders which television show the people voluntarily restricted within their houses must be watching. As Mead continues to walk, he is overwhelmed by a flashing light and a voice from the police calls him. Then begins a conversation between the police and Mead which continues to grill him of archetypical profiling questions probing him about his family status, profession, and what he was doing on the street.
Finally, Mead is taken in by the police, who takes him to a “ Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies” (Bradbury, 2). The Pit and The Pendulum written by Edgar Allan Poe is based during the time of the Spanish Inquisition and provides a fictitious yet insightful story about a man who is to be punished. Although the means of his punishment is not known but the story presents a remarkably virtual tour of how the man is first placed inside a dark well where nothing could be seen.
The man himself goes on and off through a state of exhaustion and sleep. The book takes its name from the pit and later the sharp-edged pendulum which is used by the inquisitors to kill the man. However, the man manages to survive after devising an escape plan and then being saved by the French army general, General Lasalle. The story is important in providing a historical perspective on the methods of execution used during the Spanish Inquisition thereby shedding light on historical atrocities. 1984 is a popular book written by George Orwell and although the book’ s title is of a year that has passed decades ago, its relevance lies in the way it quite realistically predicted the conditions of the year well before its arrival.
The book was written during World War II and was written about a time when Big Brother would be watching everyone and everyone would be under surveillance (Orwell, 1).
Due to its relevance to the present times and is a far-seeing storyline, 1984 is a book I would like to memorize.
