Nonetheless, the numbers are harder to measure. Therefore, schools should look at the non-academic aspects in the evaluation of students to meet the college needs. For instance, the intelligence of the students should be tested. Also, their skills of thinking and reasoning, the process of college attendance, ability to motivate self and assess his/her progress should be evaluated. Besides, the non-academic skills such as planning meetings with and academic advisers and building relationships with teachers that are less familiar with first generation students of college (Zinshteiyn, 2015). Also, the Board of Education makes all decisions for public schools, including the curriculum, teachers, and where the money is utilized, For instance, the board of education spends much money in testing.
This money, however, could be much better spent on personnel, materials and programs that will truly assist students achieve. Also, the Education Board offers students high-stakes tests. This kind of tests gives students the impression that the tests are more important that actual learning. Also, it conveys a message to them that if a subject is not on a test, then it is not worth learning.
For example, standardized tests evaluate students reading capability and math. Other subjects are ignored, thus sending the message that those subjects are less significant. Besides, when the Education Board overemphasizes on tests, the outcome is curriculum narrowing. Subjects such as music, art, and elective programs are cut since they do not aid in enhancing test scores. Therefore, education in High school should do everything it can, to match the college expectations. High schools should also create a curriculum that fills the gap between what they teach and what is taught in college.
Hence, it will not be hard for students to understand the courses in the first year of college. My position is seeking to get development in high school education to meet the college needs. I am trying to involve the education stakeholders to work together to aid the high school system of education around the country. They should make use of federal resources to help make sure the students are better prepared to go to college. For instance, job centers can supplement school counselors’ work by offering services of career development and information about the local labor market.
