There had been a movement in 1970 identified as photorealism, from which Close emerged to explore various methodologies and system-driven methods of painting that were based on the underlying processes of photography. With such an introduction, Close and the proponents that followed could easily incorporate various philosophical and artistic concepts into painting to come up with more attractive portraits. Unfortunately, Close had been struggling with dyslexia all through his artistic career, a condition that sometimes denied him the opportunity to express himself through art (Foundation, 2016). He has also fought partial paralysis, a condition that limits his working because he has applied intuitive methods over time, all of which require a stable mind and body.
His artistic works seem to have a genetic predisposition because his parents too expressed artistic pursuits immediately after marriage. The mother for instance, was a well-trained pianist but she could not further her career because of financial problems (Foundation, 2016). However, her determination to encourage Close was seen when she hired a private tutor during the early stages to help the son get essential artistic lessons.
His academic background was marred by dyslexia but the teachers were often impressed with him due to the creative manner in which he approached all projects. At a young age, Close was also diagnosed with neuromuscular conditions and facial blindness, all of which prevented him from taking part in athletics where he believed he could do well (Foundation, 2016). Due to these disabilities, Close had a difficult moment interacting and coping with friends but in college, he made a resolve to enhance his career in art and indeed he excelled.
Close resided in a neighborhood where having a formal job was the order of the day. Despite the numerous expectations from the society, he grew into a combative optimist that was not obsessed with art alone but also the process of making art (Foundation, 2016).
