There are a number of jobs in the public sector that are identical to jobs in the private sector.   These jobs include information technology, secretarial and administrative positions.   Likewise, there are jobs in the public sector that are not available in the private sector such as civil service, prosecutors, police, and firemen (Perry and Hondeghme 2008, 125).   People choose careers based on a number of motivational factors such as the demand-abilities fit; the need-supply fit and the value congruence factor Perry and Hondeghme 2008, 125). Each of these motivational fits is explored in determining why students are motivated to take the BTEC 1st Diploma in public services.   Empirical evidence of the motivational factors will be drawn from a survey of 24 students at South Park and by virtue of interview conducted with peers within this institution.   The results of these surveys and interviews will be analyzed against the literature relative to the motivational fits.

In order to effectively investigate why students would be motivated to take any particular course of study, it is necessary to first understand the nature of the relevant area of study.   This part of the study, therefore, offers some background and insight into the BTEC First Diploma in public services.     The BTEC First Diploma in public services accredited by EDEXCEL concentrates on training and education relative to public service workers; level 2 of the BTEC First Diploma in public services offers opportunities for public services employees to obtain nationally accepted vocational qualifications; provides opportunities for students to obtain a nationally accepted qualification for entering public service employment or to go on to obtain a higher education in vocational training such as Level 3 BTEC National in public services; enables students to obtain a variety of skills, attitudes and techniques for successful public service careers (National Database of Accredited Qualifications 2010).
